On Global Leadership in Physical Activity and Public Health
One of the key reasons ISPAH was founded was to inspire and nurture future leaders in the field of physical activity and public health. Without these up-and-coming leaders, all the progress that has been made since the early studies of Morris and Paffenbarger may languish and recede. Some say that leaders are born, others that leaders can be developed with appropriate teaching and mentoring. I believe in the middle way where people with leadership potential can realize that potential with appropriate mentoring. Happily, many young investigators from around the world have not only joined ISPAH, but have begun to distinguish themselves so that the field can be left in good hands as we evolve.
An emerging leader in our field is profiled in a recent article published in Nature. Pedro Hallal is a professor at the Federal University in Pelotas, Brazil and was recently recognized for his accomplishments and his leadership with a prestigious Investigator Award from the UK based Wellcome Trust. Dr. Hallal, the only non-UK scientist to be recognized with this award, has helped to propel the physical activity and public health research capacity in Brazil tremendously. ISPAH salutes Dr. Hallal on his award.
