Rationale:

The World Health Organization estimates that 41% of adults around the world are physically inactive, and 1.9 million deaths annually are attributed to physical inactivity. Physical inactivity is associated with a host of health concerns, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. Physical activity represents an important component of energy expenditure, which is one side of the energy balance equation. For many individuals it is possible to exist at a low level of energy expenditure, and this has important consequences for the development of obesity and related disorders. The most recent US dietary guidelines recommend 30 minutes/day of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity for general health, 45-60 minutes/day for the prevention of weight gain, and upwards of 90 minutes/day for the maintenance of weight loss. In the US, UK and Australia, guidelines for school-aged children and youth recommend 60 minutes/day of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity every day. However, there is still no international consensus as to the optimal levels of physical activity required for the prevention of weight gain, initiation of weight loss, or long-term maintenance of weight loss among adults or children.

Mission Statement:

The mission of the Obesity Council is to promote physically active lifestyles around the world in order to reduce the global burden of obesity.

Objectives:

  1. To provide a forum for focused discussion, debate, and networking among society members with interests in the prevention, management, and treatment of obesity.
  2. 2. To increase awareness of the importance of physical activity in the prevention, management, and treatment of obesity and related disorders.
